Medieval Music with Decorated Initials as a Book Cover

This is another example of a book bound in medieval music. Unfortunately, both front and back covers are in poor condition and much of the writing has become very faint. However, the decorated initials still stand out clearly, as do the lines for the musical notes. The spine cover is also in poor condition, with insect damage evident.

Sozzini, Mariano. Tertia pars consoliorvm Bartholomaei Sociin Senensis. Lugduni [Lyon, France], 1551.

The book within is another example of a consilia, a compilation of legal opinions written by a well-known jurist. This work is by Mariano Sozzini (1401?-1467), a legal scholar who taught in Siena, Italy. He also served as a diplomat under Pope Pius II.
